In honor of Valentine's Day this year, I've decided to post 10 ways to make your relationship last, if you want to that is. Four years in and sparks still fly between my boyfriend and I; it's honestly amazing, and I feel as if I've figured out how to make a relationship blossom and progress. Though I wouldn't call myself an expert at relationships, I'd say I've gained a great deal of knowledge having been in one and being surrounded by other relationships, some that worked and some that didn't.
How To Make a Relationship Last:
1. Always kiss him like it's your first and your last time. - Because what if it is? You never know what's going to happen and if you want that breathless kiss like you had during your first kiss, you have to feel like it is - have him hold your head with his hands or wrap his arms around you - and if he doesn't ASK HIM TO. He'll learn that that's what you love and he'll do it more often.
2. Be unpredictable. - Take a trip, kiss him randomly, surprise him with cookies on Valentine's Day [yup I just did this - for my boyfriend and his coworkers that couldn't spend Valentine's Day with those they love]. Don't be nervous or worried that he won't like what you want to do, just do it. It'll be fun and spontaneous to do something randomly! Go on vacation one weekend, even if it's just down the shore!
3. Appreciate the time spent together. - This is especially true for couples who don't get to spend much time together. I know it's horrible to not spend time with the one you love every day, but when you do spend time together, don't spend it complaining or being angry that you don't spend more time together - just take each moment together and hold is tight, enjoying it while it lasts. I would always get angry at my boyfriend for not seeing him as much as I wanted to, that I was ruining the time that we were spending together - we now only see each other on the weekend and it's still amazing.
4. Laugh Often. - If you can't laugh with each other, then I suggest you find a new significant other. Laughter is seriously the best medicine, making the relationship healthier just with a giggle. We are always making fun of each other, playfully of course, and making jokes to make each other laugh. I love when he laughs and I wouldn't trade that sound for the world. It's seriously such an integral part of a relationship, almost the most important.
5. Date Nights [almost every week]. - No matter what, you and your loved one need to make time to just be with each other. Even if it's a picnic in the living room, spend time together. Date nights don't mean go out and spend money on extravagant dinners. Do something different - rock climb, see a movie, or grab sandwiches and head to the beach to watch the sunset [it's honestly amazing]. This can happen, and when it does don't talk about life stressors, just enjoy each other and talk positively!
6. Try new things together. - Whether it's food, attending events, or experiences. Over the summer my boyfriend and I went to many country concerts together, experiencing tailgating and all, and I must admit it was extremely fun. We even made a bucket list of all things we want to do together - things ranging from skydiving to going on a cruise. If you try new things with your significant other, things can never get boring, even if it's a new restaurant down the street!
7. Communicate. - I don't think I can say this enough. It's so important to communicate. I've seen so many relationships end because the two individuals never communicated. I would always hear why my friend was mad at her boyfriend, but when I asked if he knew how she felt, they'd always reply no. Well if he doesn't know how you feel, then you're obviously not communicating with him and telling him how you truly feel. I always tell Sal how I feel, whether it's good or bad - and we're very open with each other, which is why I think our relationship has grown so strong.
8. Trust. - Without trust, there is no relationship. None. Nothing. Niente. It's impossible to have a healthy relationship if there is no trust, and I'll be the first to admit there have been times when I haven't trusted Sal, but with communication we have been able to work together and get through it. You must trust someone with all of your heart in order for things to work out - and if they've lied to you, cheated, or let you down in the past, they might do it again, but you need to trust that they won't or let them go.
9. Argue/Disagree. - Not physically of course, just verbally. It's important, I think to disagree. If you agreed all the time, it'd be pretty boring, and way too easy going of a relationship. It's like you'd be dating yourself. If one disagrees, you learn more about the other person, and you learn how to compromise with another individual.
10. Love with ALL of your heart.
Anything I missed? Let me know, I'd love to hear more ideas on how to make a relationship work!
This Valentine's Day was spent interning and enjoying dinner with my family. Sal had to work the night shift, so we won't be going out until Saturday, exchanging small gifts and spending the night together. I'm excited for it, but I'm glad I had the chance to bake him cookies tonight and deliver them to his work, to share with his coworkers who weren't going to get the chance to spend the night with their loved ones either.
Treat your loved one, whoever it may be, as if it's Valentine's Day every day!
I love you babe - Always.
