Walking the beach was always something my grandma used to love to do. It feels weird to be writing about her in the past tense... her passing still just doesn't seem real. She would walk Englewood Beach in Florida, and collect Shark Teeth. Over the years, I've come to find out, she collected 45 jars worth, and she eventually sold them to a man who makes necklaces and other treasures out of them. I can't blame her, what could a person do with that many shark teeth? So a few family members, my mom and her sister, as well as her husband, my two cousins, and brother, went to the beach. My cousin, brother, and I walked together; as a united front we searched for shark teeth. My mom found them first, and eventually found the most. I think she needed a sign the most. She needs to know that my grandmother is okay, that my mom will be okay, eventually... if not a month from now, maybe a year from now. My brother found the most perfect shark tooth that I have ever seen, and maybe that goes with what my grandmother wanted him to know - he really is incredible, it's unbelievable really, inside and out, and he'll amount to great things. My cousin was next to find one and she ended up finding it when a wave came and the spot she was staring at kept bubbling. She immediately knew. As soon as she dug in the sand, she found one. I'm positive that my grandma wants her to know that if she really looks, and really pays attention, that she can find the beauty in anything, and that life might just be that simple. Me, on the other hand, didn't find any until the very end, and I know in my heart that my grandmother was trying to tell me that things may not always be where they should - sometimes life will be hard, and it's easy to feel upset and let down, but to persevere and know that it will be okay in the end. We walked back to the entrance of the beach and the sun followed us. It suddenly disappeared when we got back, allowing us to take a few pictures together, allowing us to feel as if she was on the walk with us.
3.22.13 - I love you with all of my heart grandma. I miss you more than words.
